Roll Call In order to expedite the process for accreditation review of the proposed California State University, Channel Islands campus by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the Commission has endeavored to convene in advance of its December 11, 2000 meeting to consider the approval of the Needs Study for this new campus. Because it is not possible for a quorum to meet in person, the Commission will meet via teleconference to consider this matter. Action Item A Mission to Teach: The California State University, Channel Islands

At the October 16 meeting in Fresno, the Commission discussed the proposal for a 23rd campus in the California State University (CSU) system. In an information item, staff reviewed the Needs Study submitted for the proposed campus to be known as CSU, Channel Islands, and presented recommendations for discussion. At this meeting, staff will recommend that the Commission find that the State University has met the review criteria established by the Commission. Staff will also recommend that the Commission advise the Governor and the Legislature that the State authorize the development of the Channel Islands site as the 23rd campus of the State University System, with the stipulation that the CSU provide, by March 2001, the following items:

  • A timetable for attaining WASC accreditation;
  • A copy of the trustee-approved CSU, Northridge Ventura Center and CSU, Channel Islands Transition Plan; and
  • A copy of the Channel Islands campus Academic Master Plan.
Staff also recommends that the Commission invite the CSU to provide an update report in October 2001 on: (1) the development of the eastern portion of the Channel Islands campus and its potential to generate the resources needed to develop the core campus, and (2) efforts by the campus to maintain collaborative relationships with community colleges and independent institutions in the region.
