At the Commission meeting on September 6, the Nominating Committee recommended the following slate of officers for 2006:

  • Commission Chairperson: Howard Welinsky
  • Commission Vice Chairperson: Olivia K. Singh
  • Nominating Committee Chairperson: Hugo Morales; Lance T. Izumi and Faye Washington, Members
  • Committee on Education Code Section 66905 Chairperson: Lance T. Izumi

Action on this item will permit the new officers to assume their responsibilities on January 1, 2006.

Recommended Action: Commission election of the slate of nominees.

Presentation by Marilyn McGrath, California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
Ms. McGrath will report on teacher credentialing issues and her role as CPEC representative on the Commission.

Report of the Statutory Advisory Committee, Robert Oakes, Chair

Mr. Oakes will report on the Statutory Advisory Committee meeting held on November 30, 2005.

Improving Teacher Quality State Grants Program Update, December 2005

Regional Differences in University Eligibility

This fact sheet describes progress on a staff project examining data from the Commission's recent eligibility study to determine whether regional variations in eligibility are the result of regional differences in income and school performance, or whether they are driven by genuine cultural or regional differences. Presenter: Adrian Griffin.

High School Academic Performance Index (API) as a Predictor of University Eligibility

This report examines the strength of a school's Academic Performance Index (API) as a predictor of a student's eligibility for UC or CSU by using a statistical model. The report also describes the correlation between increases in API and eligibility rates of various ethnic groups. Presenter: Jessika Nobles.

Analysis of Student Enrollment Data

This item presents initial analysis of data collected on student enrollment pursuant to Assembly Bill 1570. It is not included in the agenda packet but will be distributed at the Commission meeting. Presenter: Adrian Griffin.

Co-authors Lance Izumi and Xiaochin Claire Yan will discuss the findings contained in their book Free to Learn: Lessons from Model Charter Schools. Topics to be discussed include curriculum and standards issues, testing issues, teacher quality and professional development, and school management and governance.
