This report addresses the "affordability crisis" in higher education today and outlines the Commission's principles, key statistics on debt burden, and the increased costs associated with college or university attendance. A panel of experts has been invited to discuss relevant issues, and to assist the Commission in the development of policies that will focus on containing the cost of attending a college or university.

Academic and Vocational Programs and Plans Proposed by the Public Higher Education Systems, 2005-06

This report highlights planning considerations of the three public higher education systems that are intended to address important aspects of California's social, workforce, and labor market needs. These include: (1) health sciences expansion plans under consideration by the University of California; (2) education doctoral program expansion under consideration by the California State University; and (3) development of a new labor market demand and supply forecasting tool for the planning process of local community colleges. Also included is an analysis of the segmental program proposals received by the Commission the past year. Presenters: Stacy Wilson and Jessika Nobles Jones.

Presentation: Matt Gandal, Achieve, Inc., Washington, DC.
Mr. Gandal is Executive Vice President of Achieve, Inc., which has worked with the Education Trust and other organizations to strengthen the preparation of high school graduates and restore value to the American high school diploma. In 2005, Achieve co-sponsored a summit of the nation's governors, along with K-12 and postsecondary educators and corporate leaders, to look at the way students are prepared for both college and the jobs of the 21st century. Mr. Gandal will provide data on the gaps in high school preparation and ways to close those gaps.
