California State University Information

California State University Logo The California State University (CSU) system includes 23 campuses across the state. These multipurpose institutions serve more than 400,000 students annually and offer both undergraduate and graduate instruction for a variety of professional and occupational goals as well as broad liberal education. Admission priority is given to students who have successfully completed their first two years at a California Community College campus.

Each State University campus retains its own unique academic and geographic character. These campuses include both comprehensive and polytechnic universities and the California Maritime Academy, a specialized campus.

The oldest CSU campus - San Jose State University - was founded in 1857 and became the first institution of public higher education in California. The most recently opened campus - California State University, Channel Islands - began admitting students in the fall of 2002.

The primary focus of the CSU faculty is providing quality instruction. CSU campuses require for graduation a basic program of "General Education-Breadth Requirements" regardless of the type of bachelor's degree or major field selected by the student.

Those transferring with 56 units or more must also have completed the general education mathematics and English courses. Depending on a number of factors, other requirements may apply. Check with the admissions office at the campus you are planning to attend. Additional information can be found on CSU's Website.

CSU provides an on-line information and application system, at www.csumentor.edu. It includes information about admission, academic requirements, fees and tuition, financial aid and other topics. Residency requirements for tuition purposes can be found in the Guide.

Governance and administration

Responsibility for the California State University is vested in the Board of Trustees. There are 25 members with 24 appointed by the governor and one appointed by the CSU Statewide Alumni Council.

The trustees, the chancellor and the presidents develop system-wide policy. Campus-level implementation is done via broadly based consultative procedures.

The Academic Senate of the California State University, made up of elected representatives of the faculty from each campus, recommends academic policy to the Board of Trustees through the Chancellor.
