College Major and Career Search - with links to Schools to Employment Pathway System (STEPS)

  • Find colleges that offer a major/program that interests you.
  • Find colleges that offer training for your job/occupation.
Majors are based on the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP 2000) Code (CIP Code). The CIP Code is a 6-digit code is a standard code developed by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). It provides a numerical classification and standard terminology for secondary and postsecondary programs. The most recent version was published in 2000.

The user can also search standard job or occupation names based on the Standard Occupation Classification (SOC) System published by the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics . The most recent version of SOC Code, published in 2000, is used to classify workers into over 820 occupations.

Search for a Major (discipline or program) to generate a list of colleges / institutions that offer that major along wiht the degree award levels (Associate, Bachelor's, etc.). Select majors / programs by using the following options:

  • Select the major/program to generate a list of colleges that offer related majors/programs.
  • Select the job/occupation to generate a list of colleges that offer related majors/programs for that job/occupation.
  • Enter a portion (one or two words) of the major/program or job/occupation as YOU know it to generate a list of matching possibilities.
  • Enter the 2-, 4- or 6-digits of the CIP Code to see all of the majors/programs in that category. Click on the CIP Code link to see a numerical list of the 2-, 4- and 6-digit codes.
Select the Major/Program or Job/Occupation, then click on the Generate Report button.

Click on list to open the drop-down menu. Type the first letter of major or job to jump to that section.
