The Commission website is updated frequently to improve service and provide more information. These release notes document these changes. Updates and known problems in the data available on the website are further documented in the Caveats.

A quick survey has been added to the Commission's home page. Questions will be available for 1 week.

May 8, 2008 - Publication ID Search Box Removed
The search box for the Publication ID has been removed from the Commission's home page at the request of upper management.

A search box for the Publication ID has been added to the Commission's home page for easy access.

April 28, 2008 - Publication ID
The Publication ID has been added to the Search page for Commission publications. It is also displayed in the details of publications under the chronological and topical lists.

April 15, 2008 - Change in Year Selection for Data
Data for the various segments of higher education are received over a period of several months. In the past, the Commission waited until all data were available before posting any data to the website because many webpages did not perform properly and caused a great deal of confusion. This year, instead of waiting, several webpages were reprogrammed to work around the issues. Now, pages that display statewide or regional data display the data for the most recent year that is complete. These pages include the Accountability Supporting Data, California Context pages, and the various College-Going Rate graphs and charts. In the Custom Data Reports, the Time Frame for Data defaults to the "Most Current Complete Year" and displays what that year is. Other, more recent years, are available in the drop-down list. For reports that include private institutions, such as Total Enrollment, the "Most Current Complete Year" may be up to two years behind the most recent data available.

April 14, 2008 - Additional Links in STEPS
Links to California Employment Development Department's Labor Market Info, California Career Zone, and Reality Check have been added to the occupation information in STEPS (School To Employment Pathways System). For an example, see Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering.

April 9, 2008 - College Choices for Local High Schools
A series of data sheets displaying College Choices for high schools in legislative districts is now available. Each data sheet can also be accessed from the legislative district detail pages. See Senate District 2 for an example.

April 4, 2008 - 2007 Improving Teacher Quality Project Abstracts
Abstracts for Improving Teacher Quality projects funded in 2007 are now available.

March 25, 2008 - More California Context Data Updated
Mean scores and the participation rates for the SAT and ACT examinations from the College Board and ACT, Inc., respective, have been loaded into the database. These data are available from the California Context page.

March 24, 2008 - California Context Data Updated
The most recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) for the number of Title IV institutions, government appropriations, degrees awarded, and student costs have been loaded into the database. All of these are available from the California Context page.

March 21, 2008 - Link between Trend and Comparisons of College-Going Rates by Legislative District
The College-Going Rate Trend Graph now links to the comparison graph showing all districts of the same legislative house. Click on the year of interest in the graph to see the other page.

March 20, 2008 - Comparison of Median Income by Educational Attainment for Counties
A graph comparing the median income by educational attainment between the state and the individual counties is now available. It can be reached from the county detail pages when available for that county. See Sacramento County for an example of the new graph. Note: Not all counties are represented in the data.

March 17, 2008 - College-Going Rate by API Graph
College-Going Rate by API Statewide Rank is now available as a graph.

March 12, 2008 - School Crosswalk Table: Column Modifications
As of March 12, the format of the Commission's School Crosswalk table has changed.

School ID Column Renamed to Record ID - The School ID column in the School Crosswalk table has been renamed to Record ID. The reason for the change is due in part to confusion created by the School ID name where users were given the impression that the values represent valid school identifiers when in fact the purpose of the column is to represent a unique identifier of a school/institution record. It is not recommended that the Record ID column be used as a means to join tables.

Segment Code and Institution ID Columns Removed - To simplify table joining, the Segment Code and Institution ID columns have been removed from the School Crosswalk table. In their place, the Institution Code column (the concatenation of the Segment Code and Institution ID columns) will serve as the link to join tables.

March 12, 2008 - High School Characteristics Page Linked to College-Going Rate by API
The search, results, and school pages of the High School Characteristics section of the website are now linked to the College-Going Rate by API Statewide Rank.

March 11, 2008 - Segment Code and Institution ID Columns
The Segment Code and Institution ID columns have been removed from the Commission's databases. However, prior to removal, these 2 columns were combined and replaced with the Institution Code column which will make table joining simpler.

February 7, 2008 - Website Index
An Index is now available to assist users in finding information on the Commissions website. New terms will be added on a regular basis based on searches conducted on the site and suggestions from users.

January 30, 2008 - College-Going Rate by API Rank
A new page has been added showing the College-Going Rate by API Statewide Rank for public high schools in California. By default, the most current year is displayed. Use the Other Options link at the bottom to view previous years and different aggregations.

January 18, 2008 - Legislative District Detail Pages
The Region Detail and County Detail pages now link to new pages containing data for legislative districts. See Assembly District 03 for an example.

January 17, 2008 - Applications Deadlines
A new page has been added to the More Information section of the Guide to California Colleges and Universities. Application Deadlines has links University of California, California State University, California Community Colleges, Cal Grant, and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) pages that describe how and when to apply.

January 14, 2008 - How to Participate
A new page, How to Participate, has been added to the website to provide information about how the public can submit comments and questions to the Commission. It is available from the most recent agendas, the meeting schedule, and the list of previous agendas.

January 11, 2008 - Funding Added to Snapshots
A quick look at the funding for the public university and college systems since the 1965-66 academic year has been added to the Statewide Snapshots.

January 10, 2008 - Main Site Search Expanded
The Education and Demographic Profiles can now be accessed from the Advanced Search page. Select this option in the "Area to search" drop-down list box.

December 18, 2007 - Link between College-Going Rate Trend Tables and Graphs
The College-Going Rate Trend Tables for Counties and Assembly and Senate Districts are now linked to the page showing a graph of the trend data for that county or district.

December 14, 2007 - College-Going Rate Trends in Table Format
College-Going Rate Trends are available for Counties and Assembly and Senate Districts in table format. Use the trend options for Counties or Legislative Districts to see the trends by ethnicity, gender, and public higher education system.

December 7, 2007 - Additional Trend Options for College-Going Rates by Legislative District
College-Going Rates Trend Options for each legislative district has been added to the website. Options are available to view the trend for any combination of ethnicity, gender, legislative district, and public higher education segment.

December 4, 2007 - Previous Years' College-Going Rates by Legislative District
The college-going rates for previous years for each Legislative district has been added to the College-Going Rates Options page. Comparison charts for these years are also available by clicking on the column headings in the table.

November 30, 2007 - Trend of College-Going Rate by Legislative District
The trend over time of college-going rate for each Legislative district is available from the main College-Going Rates by Senate District and College-Going Rates by Assembly District pages. Click on the district number and member name for the chart. More options for this chart will be available soon.

November 30, 2007 - New Commuting Charts in the College Guide
In the College Guide under the Student section, the commuting chart now displays the percentage of high school students from out-of-state. Chart design and colors were also updated.

November 30, 2007 - College-Going Rate by Legislative District
A new section has been added to California Context. The college-going rate for each Assembly and Senate district is available in both table format and as a graph showing how districts compare.

November 29, 2007 - Dynamic Suggestion Box in College Guide Search
A dynamic drop down appears when typing in the "Program Offering" text box on the College Guide Search page. It suggests possible academic programs available as the user types.

November 27, 2007 - Download Available for System-wide Transfers
The System-Wide Transfers by Community College for the California State University and the University of California from Transfer Pathways now has a form to make downloading the data easier.

November 23, 2007 - ZIP Code of Institution Linked
In the Guide to California Colleges and Universities when you click on the zip code of the institution you will be taken to a web site which provides demographic information about that zip code. For example, see Occidental College.

November 22, 2007 - Institution County Linked to County Profiles
An institution page in the Guide to California Colleges and Universities, for example Lake Tahoe Community College, is now linked to the Commission's County Profiles by clicking on the County.

November 20, 2007 - New Options in Custom Data Reports
The "Freshmen at Public Institutions" and "Freshmen at Private Institutions" reports now include options to aggregate and filter the data by the charter status of the high school. Start at the Custom Data Reports main page and select Higher Education Enrollment.

November 16, 2007 - Link to Google Earth
Institutions are now linked to Google Earth. The new link can be found in the "Additional Url" section in our College Guide. For example, Canada College.

November 1, 2007 - New College Search Option
A new option in the College Search adds the ability to search for colleges and universities by Carnegie Classification.

October 31, 2007 - Fees Added to Snapshots
A quick look at the public college and university fees since the 1965-66 academic year has been added to the Statewide Snapshots.

October 30, 2007 - Accountability Supporting Data Now on Quick Data Menu
The page listing the Supporting Data for the Accountability System has been added to the Quick Data Menu.

October 29, 2007 - School Codes Available on Mailing List
The six most commonly requested school codes are now available as options in the California Colleges Mailing List. Thanks to our users who suggested this change.

October 26, 2007 - Sorting Options Added to Freshmen Pathways
Three new sorting options have been added to the Freshmen Pathways chart that shows which high school sent students to a particular college. Sorting is available by high school name, city, and the approximate distance between the schools. When sorting by school name and city, a short-cut menu has been added to quickly move to a section of the chart. See American River College's page as an example.

October 18, 2007 - New Category Added To Useful Links
A new category has been added to the Useful Links pages: Education Blogs.

October 5, 2007 - Add Education Agency Meeting To Calendar
Links have been added to the Meetings of the Commission and Its Committees and Meeting Calendar of Education Boards and Commissions pages to add the meetings to an electronic calendar such as Outlook.

October 4, 2007 - Links Added to High School Characteristics
Links to several reports at Education Data Partnership have been added to High School Characteristics page. See the Accountability and Profile reports for both the district and the school under More Information at the bottom of Rancho Alamitos High's page as an example.

October 3, 2007 - California Context Data Available in Table Format
Some of the data displayed in graph form on the California Context page is now available in a table format that includes all years of data that are available via a link located below the graph. See Median Household Income as an example.

October 2, 2007 - State Holidays
The State holidays are now indicated on the Meeting Calendar of Education Boards and Commissions.

September 27, 2007 - New College Search Options
A new set of options in the College Search adds the ability to search for colleges and universities with certain student demographics. You can now search based on the percentage of part-time students, the percentage of students older that traditional college age, and the percentage of students of a particular race or ethnicity.

September 26, 2007 - Out-of-State Institution Page Linked to College Navigator
The Out-of -State Institution page now has a link to the Institution's College Navigator page at the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Information available includes crime statistics, financial aid, and graduation and retention rates. See Alabama State University for an example.

September 20, 2007 - 2006-07 Full-Year Transfers for California State University
The full-year transfer data for California State University for the 2006-07 academic year are now available. For a quick look, see the Transfer Pathways. More detail is available in Custom Data Reports and Data Mining. We expect to post the full-year transfer data for University of California in October 2007.

September 20, 2007 - A-G Completions
The a-g completions data from the California Department of Education have been updated. These data are available in Data by Ethnicity and Custom Data Reports. Select Higher Education Enrollment, then either of the freshmen reports.

September 17, 2007 - More Census Data in California Context Updated
New data on the percent of the population for forty California counties with high school diplomas, bachelor's degrees, and advanced degrees and the median income by educational attainment from the US Census Bureau have been loaded in California Context.

September 13, 2007 - Degree Recipients
The format of the report in the Custom Data Reports section was modified to highlight the description of the report and add more prominent links to the Caveats, known anomalies in the data, and Working with Downloaded Data, a description of the structure of the downloaded file and hints on how to import it into Microsoft Excel.

September 13, 2007 - Degree Recipients Data Updated
Data showing the percent of the population with high school diplomas and bachelor's degrees for the fifty states have been updated in California Context. The percent of the population holding advanced degrees is now included for the first time.

September 7, 2007 - Glossary Definition With Mouseover
For definition of a glossary term, mouseover either a "academic calendar" or "institutional control" link in the College Guide.

September 6, 2007 - Enacted Legislation
A new page has been added to the Legislation section of the website to maintain a list of pertinent legislation that affects the Commission. Enacted Legislation includes the enabling legislation from 1973 and AB 1570 which established the Commission's longitudinal data system. Other legislation will be added in the future.

September 5, 2007 - Out-of-State Institutions Available
The College Guide Search now has an option to include out-of-state institutions in the results. Information pages for these schools display the address, phone numbers, websites, programs offered, and degree levels offered. In addition, historically black and tribal colleges are identified along with the religious affiliation when appropriate. As with all information about colleges and universities, this information is offered as a service and inclusion does not constitute or imply a Commission endorsement. Prospective students should thoroughly research all options before selecting any educational course, institution, or program.

August 30, 2007 - Census Data in California Context Updated
New data on the percent of the population below the federal poverty level, the median household income, and the median income by educational attainment from the US Census Bureau have been loaded in California Context.

August 29, 2007 - The Commission's Library of External Reports continues to grow.
There are now nearly 90 reports available in the Commission's External Reports library. You can find reports by topic, issuing agency, or date.

August 29, 2007 - Additional Age Grouping in Custom Reports
The Enrollment by Age of Students in the Custom Data Reports now includes an age grouping that encompasses the traditional age of college students, 18-24.

August 23, 2007 - Additional URLs in the College Guide
A link to the Economic Diversity website and to the Commission's "Freshman Profiles" have been added to the college guide under the Additional URL section.

August 22, 2007 - New Category Added to the Useful Links
Useful Links now includes a category for Geographic Information to group together links related to each of California counties and regions.

August 22, 2007 - 2006 Enrollment Data for California State University
Enrollment data for California State University are now available. This updates all of the pages that rely on these data including Custom Data Reports. See Where to Find Data for other locations and views of the data.

August 22, 2007 - 2006 Public High School Graduation Data
Graduation data for California's public high schools are now available. These data are used to generate the College-Going Rates and are also used in First-Time Freshmen reports in Custom Data Reports. See Where to Find Data for other locations and uses of these data.

August 16, 2007 - College Guide Search Enhanced
The College Search now includes the ability to search for colleges and universities offering a specific degree in a particular discipline. For example, you can search for colleges and universities that offer a bachelor's degree in ecology.

July 31, 2007 - Data in California Context Updated
The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has just released the Digest of Education Statistics, 2006. The data in California Context from this source have now been updated.

July 25, 2007 - Licensing Information Added to STEPS
The School To Employment Pathways System (STEPS) now includes a listing of licenses required in California for various occupations. See the listing for Civil Engineers for an example.

July 25, 2007 - STEPS Updated
The results page of the School To Employment Pathways System (STEPS) now has links to enrollment and degree information regardless of whether the result is based on occupation or degree program. Previously, it was only available when viewing the results from the degree.

July 24, 2007 - Publication Search Updated
The Publication Search has been updated to include the option to add the topic of the report to the other criteria.

July 20, 2007 - Freshmen Pathways Linked from High School Characteristics
A link has been added to the school results page of High School Characteristics to take you directly to the Freshmen Pathways report for that high school.

July 20, 2007 - 2006 Enrollment and Completions Data for Public Colleges
The 2006 completions data for University of California, California State University, and California Community Colleges have been posted. Enrollment data for University of California and California Community Colleges are also available. This updates all of the pages that rely on these data including Custom Data Reports. See Where to Find Data for other locations and views of the data.

July 19, 2007 - Crime Statistics
Added crime statistics for campuses with multiple locations in the College Guide.

July 19, 2007 - Professor Ratings in College Guide
Colleges are linked to RateMyProfessors.com in the College Guide. The website RateMyProfessors offers ratings on college and university professors from over 6,000 schools across the United States, Canada, England, Scotland and Wales. College students use the site to help plan their class schedules and rate current and past professors on attributes such as helpfulness and clarity. The new link can be found in the URL section for a specific campus labeled "Professor Ratings". View CSU, Sacramento for an example.

July 18, 2007 - Freshmen Pathways Added
A new application has been added to the Detailed Data section of the website. Freshmen Pathways allows the user to study the relationship of first-time freshmen between California public colleges and California high schools over a 15-year period.

July 6, 2007 - New Data Available in Data by Ethnicity
The Table View of the Data by Ethnicity has been expanded to include the total number of men, women, and unknown genders for comparison to the ethnicity totals.

June 28, 2007 - New Option in College Search
The College Search now has the ability to look for housing (dormitories and student apartments) as a criterion.

June 27, 2007 - External Reports Add to Search
The Search now includes results from the External Reports; searching the title, subtitle, summary, and the publishing agency in the Commission's database.

June 26, 2007 - External Report Summaries
Summaries are now available for some of the External Reports. More will be added in the near future.

June 25, 2007 - Accountability Menu Added
The Accountability section of the website has been given its own menu on the navigation bar.

June 22, 2007 - Addition to College-Going Rates Trend Graph
The trend graph for college-going rates now includes a scale on the left to help place the graph in perspective.

June 15, 2007 - Additions to Data by Ethnicity
Three new options have been added to the Data by Ethnicity page: Population of All Residents, Population of Residents Age 18 to 24, and Population of Residents Age 18 or More.

June 14, 2007 - High School Characteristics and Outreach Programs Updated
The High School Characteristics and Outreach Programs section of the website has been updated to take advantage of the data that the Commission has regarding high schools in California. Several new options have been added to the search and more information is available for each school including the average SAT and ACT scores.

May 24, 2007 - New Data Mining System
The Data Mining system is a new way to look at the Commission's data. In addition to displaying all of the values with desired options, potential issues within the data can be identified such as large numerical differences between consecutive years reported and gaps in the data.

May 22, 2007 - Another New Feature in the College Search
The College Search now has the ability to search for a school affiliated with a particular religion.

May 21, 2007 - School To Employment Pathways System
A new section has been added. The School To Employment Pathways System (STEPS) matches degree and course of study to occupations and displays the number of degrees produced and the projected job market.

May 17, 2007 - College Search Pages Combined
All of the pages used to search the Guide to California Colleges and Universities have been combined into a single College Search page. In addition, search results are displayed on the same page so criteria can be easily refined.

May 14, 2007 - New Features in External Reports
On the External Reports page, options are now available to sort publications by topic, publication date or publishing agency.

May 1, 2007 - Reformatted and Enhanced High School Characteristic Search
The High School Characteristic Search has been reformatted and expanded to include the ability to search by geographic region, county, city, and total enrollment at the high school.

April 30, 2007 - New Feature in Advanced College Search
The Advanced College Search now has the ability to search for a school within a user-defined distance of a ZIP code.

April 27, 2007 - Advanced College Search Expanded
The Advanced College Search has been expanded to include the ability to search by the undergraduate and graduate enrollment. Also, several of the text boxes have been converted to lists of valid options to further assist in the search.

April 25, 2007 - Custom Data Reports Modified
Detailed explanations have been added for each of the reports available in the Custom Data Reports section of the website.

April 19, 2007 - Another California Context Data Update
The Unemployment Rate for California Counties has been updated on the California Context page.

April 13, 2007 - More New California County Context Data
The percent of the population who have received Advanced Degrees, Bachelor Degrees, and High School Diplomas for 40 California Counties is now available on the California Context page.

April 12, 2007 - New California County Context Data
The Median Income by Educational Attainment for 40 California Counties is now available on the California Context page.

April 11, 2007 - California Context Data Updates
The Median Household Income and Percent in Poverty for California Counties and the Number of Title IV Institutions for the 50 States have been updated on the California Context page.

April 3, 2007 - Commission Meeting Agenda Update
The roll and voting records for the agendas will now show the entity each commissioner represents. In addition, the commissioner who motioned and seconded an item for vote will be indicated and the tally for each item will be displayed. See the agenda for the meeting on March 20-21 for an example.

March 30, 2007 - Accountability System Updated
The Accountability System has been updated to align with the latest report on the framework. In addition, all the accountability reports are now available from these pages.

March 29, 2007 - New Option for the Colleges Mailing List
The California Colleges Mailing List now includes the Year Established as an option to add to the downloaded file. Look for it under Other Information Available.

March 23, 2007 - Institutional Comparison
Pick up to 4 institutions and compare their data.

March 16, 2007 - Publications Listing Reformatted
The Chronological and Topical Lists of Commission publications have been reformatted to take advantage of the new look and feel of the website.

March 13, 2007 - External Reports Now Categorized
The Commission's list of External Reports has been categorized using the same topics found on the Topical List.

March 9, 2007 - Commission Meeting Agenda Reformatted
The format for the agendas on the website has been redesigned to provide easier access to expanded resources. The meeting on March 20-21 is the first to use this new format.

March 8, 2007 - Education Foundations in Useful Links
A new category -- Education Foundations has been added to Useful Links.

March 1, 2007 - Enrollments by Grade Level for Public K-12 Schools Updated
Enrollments by Grade Level Data for Public K-12 Schools have been uploaded for Academic Year 2005. The update is the result of the recent posting of 2005 Enrollments by Grade Level data by the California Department of Education.

March 1, 2007 - Home Page Updated
The Commission's Home Page has been updated to help draw users further into the Website.

February 20, 2007 - Custom Data Reports Training Manual Released
A Custom Data Reports Training Manual is now available. This manual takes you through the generation of report from start to finish.

February 13, 2007 - Glossary Updated
The glossary has been updated to provide links, where available, to the web page of the item defined in the glossary.

February 9, 2007 - Butte Community College Data Updated
Enrollments Data for Butte Community College for Academic Years 2003, 2004, and 2005 have been updated. Go to the Commission's On-Line Page to obtain a Custom Data report. The update is the result of collaborations between the Commission and Butte Community College regarding issues with First-Time Freshmen counts.

February 8, 2007 - Data Caveats Have Been Updated
New caveats have been entered for the Commission's Custom Data Reports. Go to the Caveats Page to see the list of Data Caveats.

January 24, 2007 - Issues Section Removed
The Issues Section was removed from the website.

January 24, 2007 - Website Updated to New CA.Gov Standards

January 23, 2007 - List of Unrecognized Accreditation Agencies
A list of unrecognized accreditation agencies is available in the Accreditation section of the College Guide.

December 19, 2006 - Number of Title IV Institutions Updated
The Number of Title IV Institutions in the 2004-05 academic year for all states has been posted on the California Context page.

December 19, 2006 - California County Data Updated
The 2003 data for Median Household Income and Percent in Poverty for California counties have been posted to the California Context page. These are the most recent data available from the US Census Bureau.

December 14, 2006 - Expansion of E-Mail Sign Ups
The Sign Up for Notification page has been expanded to include notification of new reports, new caveats, changes to the CDS/Crosswalk system, and new versions of the college guide.

December 8, 2006 - California Colleges and Universities, 2006
The latest version of the printed California Colleges and Universities, 2006 is now available for download.

November 22, 2006 - High School Information Added to Data by Ethnicity
Data by Ethnicity now includes charts showing high school graduates, a-g completions, 12th grade enrollment, and 9th grade enrollment by ethnicity for public high schools.

November 17, 2006 - Data by Ethnicity
A new section has been added to the Data Menu. Data by Ethnicity is a series of charts showing the percentage of students of an ethnicity as compared to the total for various public higher education statistics.

November 15, 2006 - Funding, Fees, Economic Comparisons
Data from the latest Fiscal Profiles report have been used to update the Funding, Fees, and Economic Comparison pages of the Accountability System.

November 13, 2006 - E-Mail Notification of Data Updates
The Commission has added the ability to sign up to receive notification when new data are posted to the website. Visit Sign Up for Notification and enter your e-mail address.

November 1, 2006 - CCC FTF Data
Data tables have been updated for California Community College (CCC) First-Time Freshmen Data. These numbers are used for many calculations on the website such as the College-Going Rates to Public Colleges and Universities.    Fall, 2005 CCC numbers are updated. The Commission anticipates updating the CCC numbers again before the end of the year as better data become available from the California Community College Chancellor's Office.

October 31, 2006 - Full Year Transfer Data
Data tables have been updated for Full Year Transfers to Public Institutions.    Data are now available for 2006.

October 31, 2006 - Per Capita Data
Options are now available on the Appropriations page and on the Needs-Based Scholarship page of California Context to display the data per capita in three different ways - per person in the population, per student enrolled, and per full-time equivalent student.

October 27, 2006 - Median Income
A new page has been added to the California Context page that displays a comparison of the Median Income of adults in the United States and California by educational attainment.

In addition to a graph of funding from General Purpose Funds and Resident Student Fee Revenues in the Accountability System, there is now a graph of Resident Student Fee Revenues as a percent of General Purpose Funds and as a percent of combined funding.

  • The descriptions for the college sections in the Transfer reports were modified so that the Sending and Receiving institutions are more obvious.

Comprehensive High Schools includes Public K-12 Schools (Grades K-12) and Public High Schools (Grades 9-12). This differs from the Public High Schools grouping that also includes Public Alternative Schools and Public Continuation High Schools (Grades 9-12). More information about the categories used for schools can be found in the Data Element Dictionary under School Ownership.
