College-Going Rate Trend Options

College-going rates by ethnicity and gender are available from 1985 to 2008.

College-going rates were calculated by dividing the number of entering freshmen aged 19 and younger from high schools matching a specific criteria by the total number of graduates from high schools matching the same criteria. All categories of public high schools are covered including comprehensive schools, continuation schools, and other categories of schools. Unknown genders and ethnicities are excluded from the data.

Data regarding high school graduates were obtained from the California Department of Education. Data for freshmen enrollment were obtained from each of the segments and includes all students -- full-time, part-time, credit, and non-credit.

Note that the calculation of these rates is based on totals for each category such as year, county, and ethnicity. Rates do not entail longitudinal tracking of individual students.

Ethnicity data is collected separately by K-12 schools and higher education institutions. Consequently, college-going rates may be affected by variations in reporting of ethnicity.
